The Grand Island KIDZ family event in August, 2007 had an awesome turn-out! There were 67 people in attendance. The kids had a great time with carnival games, diabetes bingo, crafts and winning prizes. The older kids enjoyed helping with the games and getting to know each other.
A huge THANK YOU!! to our Grand Island Coordinator, Kim Bockmann for all her work planning and organizing the event! It was fantastic.
We had lots of positive feedback on our main speaker. Kathy Koch spoke on insurance issues and diabetes. Kathy has a unique perspective, having 2 sons with type 1 diabetes herself, and also has worked in the insurance industry for a number of years. It It was an eye-opener to learn the realities of medical coverage in regard to a chronic illness. Kathy made a wonderful hand-out about health and life insurance issues with lots of great tips for us as parents of children with diabetes. If you weren't able to attend, but would like a hand-out, please contact Kim Bockmann.
Kathy's teen son, Brandon, also collaborated with Colleen Gnewuch, CDE-St. Francis Hospital, in speaking with the teens and kids regarding diabetes issues.
Trish Curran (Lion's Club) left business cards with her phone number if anyone is interested in inquiring about test strips for financially needy families.
Melissa Vap Kubicka gave updates on her trip to Washington D.C. this summer on behalf of the Children's Congress and the Promise to Remember Me Campaign.
Sarah Swanson shared her family's experiences with the new continuous glucose monitor for her 7 year old son.
Kim Bockmann provided updates regarding the KIDZ lending library.
Both Sarah and Kim also provided information regarding the upcoming ADA Walk (October 28, 2007 at UNK Campus, Kearney, contact Shawn Murphy at the ADA for more information) and the JDRF Walk (September 16, 2007, Yanney Park, Kearney, contact Sarah Swanson for more details).
KIDZ was also fortunate to have several vendors and exhibits at the August event including Abbott, Medtronic Minimed, Roche Accu-Chek, and the Lending Library. Thanks to all who helped with the activities, planning, and preparation of the event and we look forward to sharing more information, fun, and education, at the next KIDZ event in Kearney in November.
